Options to Consider with Contacts When Reading isn’t Easy

As you age the age related changes in the internal lens disallows the eyes to focus enough to allow the person to take part in reading or other activities. This is often the case after the 4th decade of life, and is called presbyopia and is often the cause of impolite birthday cards and gag gifts. However, due to the lifestyle changes it generally affects the life of the patient but there is hope, there are options available for you to allow you to read conveniently without losing the benefits of wearing contact lens wear.

Reading Glasses Over Contacts

Simple reading glasses, will allow you to wear it over the contacts and allow you to read correctly and comfortably and be the closest to natural vision. The glasses will allow the users to read short distance and will blur the vision while watching through to the long distance, therefore you need bi-focals or half-eye frames. While this approach is easy, it requires that you don’t lose your glasses over time.

Mono-Vision Contact Lenses

It is available with both rigid and soft lenses, this takes the advantage of the vision correction of the two eyes overlaps and improves reading. It corrects the dominant eye for distance and the fellow eye to see for reading. Approximately 70% of users find this approach comfortable and convenient and do not experience blur, though it is seen that extended reading and night driving may be hampered. This vision correction process takes several doctor office visits to correct the difference between the distance and reading powers.

Bifocal contact Lenses

Bifocal contact lenses are available in rigid and soft lens design. They are both segment lenses that have a line similar to eyeglass bifocals, and simultaneous vision bifocals that take advantage of the brain’s ability to see a clear image and ignore a blurred image. The advantage of bifocal lenses, is that the eye sees both the near as well as at a distance, allowing for normal binocular vision. However to see both near as well as far, one may have to lose the other. These lenses are the most complicated, to fit and for the patients to adapt to. they require multiple office visits and lens changes.
