3 Common Eye Problems Found in Children

Parents, each and every one of them want their children to be happy, but there may be sometimes where they develop a specific ailment or illness. When it comes to the eyes, there are a variety of ailments which a child may develop over the years. It is important that you are aware of the common eye problems that affect children, so you know how to treat them. You should know about the following common paediatric eye problems:

Amblyopia

Amblyopia is a common ailments which is called as lazy eye, which occurs due to the decreased eye vision in one or both eyes due to lack of proper visual stimulation. Amblyopia can be a result of a variety conditions including strabismus (misalignment of the eyes) a pediatric cataract (which disrupts light passing through the eye, or most commonly a high glasses prescription that is not detected early enough. Amblyopia is a common ailment which affects children when he/ she is very young, especially during preschool.

Hyperopia and Myopia

Hyperopia is a condition where a patient can see distant objects but has a problem seeing things which are closer. Myopia is known as nearsightedness, is the exact opposite of Hyperopia where a person can see objects which are close by but has problem seeing objects which are far away properly. Often, if these conditions are left untreated for a longer period of time, it can lead to amblyopia. A common treatment for this condition is contacts or glasses when the child is old enough to handle them.

Conjunctivitis

This condition, commonly known as pink eye, is either a bacterial or viral infection or an allergic reaction which is not contagious. If your child has pink eye, their eyes will become red and inflamed and there will be discharge from the tear ducts. If your child has pink eye then it is recommended that they should stay at home for a period of 3 days to a week as it is contagious and based on the severity of the situation. Once the tearing and discharge have stopped, your child can return to school.
